LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST

Language placement testing services are conducted in-person at the Testing Center, located in Lama Library, Room 101.

What languages are available:

Placement testing for seven (7) languages are available: Chinese, Filipino, French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Taking the language placement test determines your eligibility to either start at a level beyond the introductory 101 level or determine native fluency in a particular language.

Special instructions for speakers of American Sign Language:
Students with knowledge of ASL who would like to arrange for placement testing should contact Crissy Holmes by e-mail at holmesc@hawaii.edu.

Please follow the procedures below to take your placement test.

1.   Schedule your language placement test

  • Appointments must be scheduled at least two (2) calendar days (or more) prior to your desired test date.
  • Availability is limited and seats fill up quickly.
    Contact the Testing Center at 808.734.9144 for more information about future test availability.
  • After you schedule your test, you will receive an e-mail confirming the date and time of your testing appointment.

2.  On your scheduled test day

  • If you or someone you are in close contact with is sick, please don't come to campus and stay home.
  • Arrive 10 - 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
  • Bring the following:
    • A photo ID (Drivers license / permit, State ID, Military ID, School ID, Permanent Resident Card, etc).
    • A pen or pencil.
    • A face mask (optional, not required).
  • Testing center staff will provide scratch paper.
