Aloha and welcome! Before you begin working through this 3-part lesson that makes up An Introduction to Information Literacy, let's talk a little about a big problem: misinformation.
In our current networked world, we have SO MUCH access to information each time we connect to the Internet and interact with friends, family, and absolute strangers ... whether it's through social media, seeing news stories or performing searches on Google, all kinds of information about news, events, and advice are right at our fingertips! At first, this probably sounds awesome! We can harness the power of others by throwing out a question, or ask Google! However, how credible is the information we get back in return?
Unfortunately, wrapped amongst all that information, is an unhealthy dose of misinformation. Misinformation can be spread without the author realizing that the information they are sharing or posting is inaccurate. Or, perhaps it was just an opinion, that later became more than that? Disinformation is another story. When someone posts disinformation, they knowingly are posting information that is false or misleading.
This course hopes to give you a healthy shot of information literacy to boost your immunity so you can ward off misinformation and disinformation, and make better choices when looking for answers... or trying to complete your research assignments by citing credible information resources! Beyond your schoolwork, it's important to realize this is a skill you can take with you for the rest of your life.
This course is only an introduction, but will hopefully help you feel more confident and motivated to practice these skills in school, at work, and in your personal life. At any time, if you require assistance, please REACH OUT!
